Santo Domingo traffic: the best and worst times to go
In Santo Domingo the jam is called the tapón and it costs you approx. 30 to 60 extra minutes every time you cross the city at rush hour. The two bad windows Monday to Friday are approx. 6:30 to 9:30 in the morning and 4:30 to 7:30 in the afternoon. The cleanest time to leave the capital is mid morning, between 9:30 and 11:30. The worst moments of the week are not weekdays at all: they are Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.

How long journeys really take in the Dominican Republic
A map gives you the time of a car moving well and never stopping. A real bus adds stops, the jam on the way out of the city and the operator's margin. Comparing the car time with the duration we publish on our 23 direct routes, the median is 20% more, and 22 of the 23 stay below 40%. Rule of thumb: on a direct trip add 20% to whatever the map says. If the trip involves a connection, add a full hour on top for each one.

No intercity bus leaves from the Punta Cana airport (PUJ) terminal itself. The bus option is a 20 minute Uber or taxi ride to the Expreso Bavaro stop at Cruce de Friusa, then about 3 hours and 10 minutes on the coach to Gazcue, in central Santo Domingo.

Santo Domingo Airport to Punta Cana: Bus and Options
From Las Americas airport (SDQ) to Punta Cana by bus takes about 4 hours in total. First a 25 to 35 minute Uber or taxi ride to the Expreso Bavaro terminal in Gazcue, then around 190 minutes on the coach to Cruce de Friusa, in Bavaro. A direct private transfer costs between 125 and 200 USD approx.

Getting to Samana and Las Terrenas from the Airport
If you land at El Catey (AZS), Las Terrenas is about 40 minutes away by taxi along the Boulevard Turistico and there is no useful bus from the airport. If you land at Las Americas (SDQ) there is a bus: Asotrapusa goes to Las Terrenas and Caribe Tours to Samana town, each from its own stop in Santo Domingo.

Santiago Airport to Puerto Plata and Sosua by Bus
From Cibao airport (STI) to Puerto Plata by bus takes about 2 and a half hours in total: a 20 minute taxi to the Caribe Tours terminal in Santiago, 45 minutes of early arrival and around 90 minutes on the coach for the 65 km. For Sosua add a bit over half an hour by local guagua or taxi from Puerto Plata.

Intercity buses in the Dominican Republic tend to make their last departure mid afternoon, and we know of no night services on the Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Las Terrenas, Santiago and Puerto Plata routes. If you land after 5 pm you have three ways out: sleep nearby and take a morning bus, a private transfer from 90 to 125 USD approx. depending on the route, or rethink the first day.

Caribe Tours vs Metro vs Expreso Bavaro: which bus is which
Caribe Tours is the country's largest coach network. It links Santo Domingo with Santiago, Puerto Plata, Samana and La Romana. Metro runs first class coaches on the Santo Domingo, Santiago and north coast corridor. Expreso Bavaro is the only one of the three that connects Punta Cana with Santo Domingo, cash only.

Luggage on Dominican buses: suitcases, surfboards and bikes
On Dominican intercity coaches, one large suitcase per person usually travels in the hold at no charge and a backpack stays with you on board. Surfboards and bicycles depend on the space in the bus and the driver's call: there is no guarantee. That is why it pays to arrive 45 minutes to 1 hour early, depending on the operator, so bulky luggage gets loaded first.

Punta Cana to La Romana and Bayahibe: The Short Bus Route
Punta Cana and La Romana are roughly 100 km and under 2 hours apart by road, yet almost nobody goes by bus. Our data has no direct line: you chain local guaguas via Higuey or, if the operator allows it, which we have not confirmed, ask to get off at La Romana on the Expreso Bavaro bus to Santo Domingo. From La Romana, Bayahibe is about 20 minutes by taxi.
