Las Terrenas and Samana guide
The Samana peninsula is the country's best kept secret: undeveloped beaches, the El Limon waterfall and humpback whales in winter. Las Terrenas, with its mix of Dominicans, French and Italians, is the perfect base.
When to go
From November to March the weather is perfect and from mid January to mid March humpback whales fill the bay of Samana. Summer is green, warm and quieter.
Getting there without a car
From Santo Domingo, the Asotrapusa guagua leaves from Calle Barahona and reaches central Las Terrenas in about 2.5 hours. From Punta Cana, Guagualine sells the combined itinerary via Santo Domingo with an assisted connection.
